Petrópolis Imperial City

Little more than 50km separates Rio de Janeiro from Petrópolis. This paradisical region served as the main route linking Rio de Janeiro to Minas Gerais. Around 1830 its rich natural beauty drew the attention of Dom Pedro I to the city and led him to purchase a farm there. The city, however, was only founded in 1843 during the reign of Dom Pedro II.
During the second half of the XIX century, Petrópolis had all the glamour of a Royal Court and was an important political center.
Despite the Proclamation of the Republic and subsequent exile of the Imperial Family, Petrópolis was able to maintain its reputation and remained the state capital of Rio de Janeiro between 1894 and 1903. After 1904, the former residence of "Barăo do Rio Negro" became the Presidential summer residence.
This charming mountain city has attractions to please the most varied tastes. Besides the beautiful historical center with its immeasurable cultural heritage, Petrópolis delights its visitors with its mild climate, exceptional gastronomy and extensive and diversified option of hotels and "pousadas".
Petrópolis is today one of the premier tourist destinations in the State of Rio de Janeiro, a destination that will make you part of its historic past.
